Biceps Tenotomy vs Tenodesis
Summary
Both biceps tenodesis and biceps tenotomy are surgical procedures used to treat a painful, torn long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT). The LHBT is located in the shoulder and is responsible for flexing the elbow and rotating the forearm. When it tears, it can cause pain, weakness, and a noticeable bulge in the upper arm (Popeye deformity).
Involves reattaching the torn tendon to the bone (usually the humerus) using sutures or anchors.
Preserves biceps function and reduces the risk of Popeye deformity.
May require a longer recovery time and have a higher risk of complications than tenotomy.
Biceps Tenodesis
Involves cutting and releasing the torn tendon.
Less invasive and has a quicker recovery time than tenodesis.
May result in a more noticeable Popeye deformity and some loss of biceps strength..
Biceps Tenotomy
